The 2016 Tony Award Winners

The 2016 Tony Awards saw history with an incredible 16 nominations for the smash hit Hamilton, one of the most successful and critically acclaimed shows ever to grace Broadway. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s magnum opus details the life of Alexander Hamilton, an American Founding Father who (SPOILER ALERT) met his untimely end at the hands of a political rival. Unfortunately, despite clinching an impressive 11 awards, Hamilton did not twice make history – The Producers (2001) remains the winningest musical, with 12 wins.

The Hip Hop show took home “Best Musical,” “Best Book,” and “Best Original Score.” Other notable winners include “The Color Purple,” which took “Best Revival of a Musical,” and “She Loves Me,” which beat out Hamilton for “Best Scenic Design.”
