Seeds of Hope: A Piano Collection Rooted in Creativity, Community, and Compassion
The project began with a simple but powerful question: what can musicians do when faced with hardship and conflict happening elsewhere in the world? Inspired by a fundraising concert and a desire to create something positive, Mathews gathered an international group of composers, educators, and arrangers to contribute music for young pianists. The result is a collection that celebrates creativity while supporting organizations that provide music education opportunities for children affected by conflict.
Designed for elementary to early-intermediate pianists, Seeds of Hope includes original piano solos, duets, and arrangements inspired by nature, growth, resilience, and hope. The collection also incorporates Palestinian folk melodies and children’s songs, offering students an opportunity to encounter musical traditions they may not otherwise experience in their studies.
What makes the book particularly engaging is its educational approach. Rather than presenting repertoire alone, many of the pieces are accompanied by creative prompts and activities that encourage exploration, imagination, and musical curiosity. Teachers will find material that supports technical development while also inviting students to think beyond the notes on the page.
The collection features contributions from twenty-two internationally recognized educational composers, bringing together a wide variety of musical voices and styles. Yet despite the diversity of contributors, the book maintains a unified theme: the idea that music can nurture empathy, understanding, and connection.
In discussing the project, Mathews has emphasized the importance of creating repertoire that inspires students while remaining pedagogically sound. Her background as a pianist, composer, and educator helped shape a collection that balances accessibility with artistic expression, making it appealing for both teachers and learners.
At its heart, Seeds of Hope is more than a piano anthology. It is a reminder of music’s unique ability to bring people together, encourage creativity, and foster understanding across cultures. For teachers seeking fresh repertoire and students looking for imaginative new pieces to explore, the collection offers an opportunity to engage with music that is both educational and meaningful.
Whether approached as a teaching resource, a source of new repertoire, or simply an inspiring collaborative project, Seeds of Hope demonstrates how music can plant small seeds that grow into something much larger: curiosity, connection, and hope.
