Five Songs for Father’s Day

There have been a number of famous musical families throughout history. One of the largest and most famous is the Bach family; the best known member of the family, Johann Sebastian Bach, was the youngest son of Johann Ambrosius Bach, a professional musician whose brothers also were musicians. J.S. Bach had several sons who themselves were accomplished musicians. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s father, Leopold, was a composer, violinist, and pedagogue.

Several modern musicians are fathers of children who share their talent. Frank Sinatra’s daughter, Nancy, had several hits, including the only father-daughter duet to reach Number 1 on the charts – “Somethin’ Stupid.” Bob Dylan’s son Jakob has a successful musical career. Two of the Beatles, Ringo Starr and John Lennon, each have musical sons (Zak Starkey and Sean and Julian Lennon, respectively). In honor of Father’s Day, here are five songs to commemorate the occasion:

  1. Kristin Chenoweth – “Fathers and Daughters”
  1. Harry Chapin – “Cat’s in the Cradle”
  1. Stephen Schwartz – “Fathers and Sons”
  1. Madonna – “Papa Don’t Preach”
  1. Eric Clapton – “My Father’s Eyes”
